SAFETY RECALL - 5K LATCH, KEYED FUNCTIONS

In November of 2005, Stanley BEST launched the 5K lockset, a light / medium duty tubular lockset listed as meeting ANSI /BHMA Grade 2 standards. We recently received notice of quality issues impacting the latch performance on keyed functions of the 5K lockset. For these keyed functions, the latch has the potential of failing in the locked position in certain installations such that the door cannot be unlocked from the inside. Based on these quality concerns, we will be replacing the latches on all keyed functions for 5K locksets that have shipped since the product launched in November, 2005. The impacted functions are the keyed functions, specifically the Entrance (A) function, the Storeroom (D) function and the Classroom (R) functions.

We have established the following process for handling replacement latches. For locks that are still in inventory, please contact our Product Support department, 1-800-479-9087 who will place the order for latch returns or replacement latches. When you receive the latches, please send us the old latches using the UPS account number that we will provide to you. Our product support team will issue you a RMA (Return Material Authorization) number which needs to be clearly indicated on the return shipping carton or label. We will credit your account for any labor you incur to make the latch switch to your inventory. For locks that have been installed on doors, please call our Product Support department, 1-800-479-9087. We will schedule a technical representative to replace the latches for those locks that have been installed. Our service department will contact you to coordinate replacement service.
We realize that any recall effort creates a disruption in your business, and we apologize for that disruption. However, Stanley feels that prompt remedial action is necessary to address this product issue, and we will pursue such action as expeditiously as possible.
Sincerely,
Scott Straton
